This 6 day all-inclusive northern lights photo tour in Lapland is an exclusive package and is suitable for photographers of all levels. The tour is led by professional photographer Peter Rosén. Peter is the photographer behind the books Aurora Borealis in Lapland and Midnight Sun over Swedish Lapland and has more than 20 years of experience in professional photography.
All previous overnight participants over the past nine years have seen and captured the Aurora in beautiful environments (c. 80 groups). We are also happy to be the best rated aurora tour provider in Sweden and the winner of the TripAdvisor Certificate of Excellence Award 2014-2019.
Nature, culture and photo guiding
Say Swedish Lapland and images of a pristine mountain landscape, arctic wildlife, the living Sami culture and Aurora borealis soon come to mind. This tour brings it all to life! Your guide will be professional photographer Peter Rosén. His background is as a biologist and associate professor in environmental science but work since 2012 as a full time photographer. Peter offers you an in-depth photo course on how to capture the aurora, stars, galaxies, Sámi culture, wildlife and the spellbinding midwinter landscape in the best possible way.
Peter will also bring you the full story behind your beautiful images! The history of the breath taking nature and exciting culture of Lapland is an essential part of every tour. Your guide will tell you about the Sami culture that is an integral part of this region, the fascinating science behind the northern lights, the unique ecosystem you are in and how it has been shaped by natural forces over the millennia. The animals and vegetation are specialized to survive this climate, from the lichens clinging to rocks up to the majestic moose. Every photo you shoot captures some aspect of Lapland culture, science and history.
We have the photo equipment for you
The tour is part of the Canon Photography School and thanks to Canon and Manfrotto, we can offer amarteur and professional SLR cameras, lenses (14-500mm), tripods, an astro star tracker and ditogear motorized time lapse rail – at no additional cost.
We can help you to extend your tour
We can recommend you to add two extra nights in Abisko or at Camp Ripan in Kiruna including full board, activities and all transfers. Choose between snow mobile tour, dog sledding, evening aurora photo tour with Sami photographers or visit the Sami people and get knowledge about their daily life.
Itinerary for your tour

Lapland Landscapes and Aurora Borealis
We will pick you up at the airport, the train station or any hotel in Kiruna after lunch. We will provide you with warm clothing (warm overall, boots, hat, gloves and socks) in Kiruna. We will then head further up into the mountains and to the small village of Abisko – famous for aurora watching. We settle into our accommodations.
After our sumptuous 3 course dinner, it’s time to gear up. We will provide you with any photo equipment you might need (we have a good selection of Canon cameras, lenses and manfrotto tripods). We start with an introduction to northern lights and night photographing before heading out into the mid-winter landscape of Abisko National Park. We will either take a snowmobile ride into the Abisko valley or take a minibus to a nice photo spot. We are flexible to maximize our chances for great aurora images. We return to our hotel around midnight for a well-deserved sleep. -
Landscapes, chance for moose, northern lights and astro
Abisko National Park and its surroundings are an adventurer’s playground, and offer a diverse range of subject matter for great photography. If we have good weather, we spend a lot of time outdoors and we choose location based on weather. The opportunities are for a snow mobile tour into the Abisko Valley where we have good chances for good landscapes and moose experiences (the participants sit on a sled). Lunch at your hotel. In the afternoon there is the possibility that we will go to other nice places along the road to Norway with views of the well-known Mt. Lapporten. Bring your passport if we choose to cross the border.
After a 3-course dinner, we jump on a snowmobile and head into the wilderness to a traditional lavvu (tipi), set up in our own location to provide a wonderful foreground for the aurora, or a great subject to photograph in its own right. We’ll also have a fire in the tent. If the weather is better somewhere else, we will just take the minibus to another nice photo spot. Flexibility is the key to success for aurora photographing. -
Landscape, ICEHOTEL, northern lights, dog sledding and astro
After your breakfast we pack the minibus and head over to the ICEHOTEL. We have lunch and make a day visit at the world's first ice hotel, which this year celebrates 31 years. The ICEHOTEL is truly an inspiring environment for photographing both the fine art, the rooms but also for macro photography of details. During the afternoon we download pictures, time for private lessons and maybe a wood-fired sauna and swim in a warm outdoor jacuzzi. After tonight's 2 course dinner, we go out dog sledding and northern lights hunting. The dogs and a tipi tent can become a nice foreground to our images. We are out with the dogs until midnight. -
Sami culture, reindeer sledding, reindeers, Sami lunch, northern lights and astro
Reindeer sledding is usually one of the highlights of this 6 day tour. We meet Sami people in a nice place outside Jukkasjärvi and after an introduction we feed the reindeers and catch some that will take us out in the forest. You are welcome to run your own reindeer sled (great fun). We make photo stops along the way where you get the opportunity to photograph reindeers and Sami wearing their old traditional clothes in nice environments. This will be an almost unique photo opportunity. After the reindeer sledge tour, we eat a traditional Sami lunch in a lavvu (tipi) where we learn more about the Sami culture. Around 2 pm we head back to Aurora Wilderness Camp where the wooden-fired sauna and outdoor jacuzzi wait you.
After tonight's 2 course dinner, we go out on a northern hunting again. Hopefully the weather is with us so we can take the snow mobile and the sled to one of Peter's favorite places for northern lights photography, the open water place, but we are flexible to maximize our aurora chances. -
Dog sledding, landscapes, birds, northern lights and astro
We start a dogsledding tour in the morning from our cabins. Our dog sledding guide will drive us into the forest and onto frozen lakes for several hours, making stops for photography along the way. Lunch outdoors over an open fire inside a lavvu (a traditional Sami teepee tent). Returning to camp around 2pm. In the afternoon we will have some free time to download images, time for private tuition and perhaps a wood-heated sauna and jacuzzi.
After dinner, we will go aurora hunting, a pattern you know by now. -
Departure
After dragging ourselves out of bed and having breakfast, you depart at a civilized mid-morning time to Kiruna for some shopping, visiting the church in Kiruna and then to the airport or your hotel if you decide to extend your tour. You may like to spend more time in Stockholm, or stop over at one of the many wonderful European destinations on your way home. By now you will be wanting to sleep for a million years, but you will not be able to wipe the smile off your face! We recommend booking your departure flight at the earliest around lunch time.

The photo tour includes
4 nights at the Abisko Mountain Lodge. Full board from dinner day 1 to breakfast day 5. Gourmet three course dinners created with local delicacies such as reindeer, arctic char or moose. Gluten free, vegetarian and vegan meals available upon request.

Min age 18 yrs (we do always want to talk to you if younger people would like to join the tour). All activities are moderate. The chance to see and photograph the Aurora Borealis is large but as this a natural phenomenon we can never leave any guarantee. The itinerary may change due to unforeseen conditions. -
7 Member Groups
Small group of max 7 guests to enable us to be very flexible and spend as much one on one time with your guide as possible as possible.
