Göran Strand has worked with photography since the early 1990s and guided various photography groups for several years, not only for the northern lights, but also for astrophotography and total solar eclipses. In recent years he has worked with Bonnier publications in Denmark as a photo guide on their total solar eclipse tours and has extensive knowledge of Arctic nature, culture and natural phenomena. He regularly teaches photography students at the high school about astrophotography and various celestial phenomena and holds several public lectures each year. So expect that you get a good overview not only of photography but also more knowledge of the Arctic nature and natural phenomena.

Itinerary for your tour

  • 12:00 - 13:30
Göran Strand will meet you at the airport, train station or your hotel in Kiruna. You take a transfer with any photo stops along the way to Abisko. Check-in at Abisko Mountain Lodge.
    16:30 - 17:30
Göran gives an introduction to northern lights and night photography and acquaint us with the cameras. Canon cameras, lenses from 14-500mm and tripods are available for lending.
    17:30
3 course dinner at your hotel.
    19:30 - 00:00
We go to a nice photo spot for northern lights and astro photography. We have access to a snow mobile and AWD minibus throughout the tour and choose the place that feels most suitable for the evening, for example, into the Abisko Valley and to our favorite spot located with a view of the mountains, fine pine trees and a traditional Sami lavvu (Tentipi® Nordic tipi). We go through the northern lights, night and astrophotography and arrange nice pictures for you. If the northern lights dance for us then we are out late and will return to the hotel around midnight.
  • 09:30 - 13:30
Dog sledding into the Abisko National Park. We have lunch outdoors in a traditional lavvu (tipi tent) and make coffee / tea over an open fire.
    14:00 - 16:30
Download photos and access to sauna at your hotel.
    16:30 - 17:30
Göran is available at the hotel to comment on your photos and we learn from any mistakes before the evening’s photography.
    17:30
3 course dinner at your hotel together with the other participants and your photo guide.
    19:30 - 00:00
Depending on the weather, we have two options for this evening. Either we take a minibus ride to a beautiful photo spot or we will explore new nice photo spots in Abisko National Park with our snow mobile (you will sit on a sleigh). It happens that we go to the Norwegian fjords in the evening if the conditions are best there. By being flexible we increase the chances of succeeding with good northern lights. The northern lights, night and the astrophoto course continue step by step and we arrange many new pictures. Back to your hotel in Abisko.
  • 09:30 - 16:00
After breakfast we pack our photo bags and head west. We drive along a very beautiful road where we are just at the tree line with high mountains around us. After the national border to Norway we drive down to Narvik and visit a fish restaurant for lunch (they also have non fish dishes). After lunch we visit one of Norway’s most spectacular fjords that really inspires landscape photography.
    17:30
3 course dinner at your hotel together with the other participants and your photo guide.
    19:30 - 00:00
Either we take a minibus ride to a beautiful photo spot or we will explore new nice photo spots in Abisko National Park with our snow mobile (you will sit on a sleigh). We discover Abisko National Park, the beautiful canyon and visit an ice fall. You will have access to good lenses for landscape photography and you will learn landscape photography.
    12:00 - 13:00
    Lunch at your hotel.
    14:00 - 16:00
Göran gives you constructive comments on your pictures and shows how you can best edit northern lights and landscape images in the computer. Göran will teach you how to best edit RAW image for print or web. If there is interest in editing astro images, Göran is happy to go through that process as well.

  • 09:30 – 10:00
After a relaxed breakfast, it is time to check out from your hotel. Ideally we see that your flight does not take off until the earliest at lunch so that we can take a slow ride towards Kiruna and if something nice turns up along the way we stop for photography. If you choose an early flight, we can arrange a transfer at an extra cost. But maybe you choose to stay an extra night in Abisko or Kiruna. In this case, we will help you book your accommodation and activities. Or you may want to make a stop and explore Stockholm or why not stop over at one of our many wonderful European destinations on your way home.
